A big stereotype is the color of his skin. It didn't matter that his father had own the ranch before The Boss did, the stereotype of that time was quite stong and influencial. Also, he has a crooked back, which would give everyone the idea that he couldn't work as efficiently as others and thus has been further discriminated against.
Really, High-school is pretty much the deffinition of stereotypes. Or at least it holds the largest mass of people who create stereotypes against each other.
And Pye, not all women are bad drivers. It's actually a scientific fact that men get into more car accidents because they are much more impacient.
pye: i disagree that all woman are bad drivers, it just depends on how much expirence you have. And i do know lots of guys who are terrible drivers too!
i agree cassie and jason. When you just walk into a honors class there is going to be some kind of asian in there. Also my link leader is an asian and he is pretty smart he is like the student body president or something like that
I agree with Allie. When people hold onto stereotypes, I guess it's because people are feeling left out so then they continue to make others feel bad so they feel better about themselves.
Does someone have to have a stereotype?? I hate how people are just like "assigned" a sterotype. And I don't agree how, i think it was Allie, said that your sterotype stays with you your whole life. So many people change during and after high school, and so can their stereotype.
I agree with Allie. I think that some people feed off of stereotypes so they know how to act. Like some of the cheerleaders for example. Some of them change when they became a cheerleader. They feel like they are alot better than all the other girls.
I definitely agree with Nicole when she said high school is the definition of sterotypes. It's basically the time when everyone is "creating themselves." And how the world wants to see you as.
everyone that disagrees with me about female drivers; men may get into more accidents but no men do any of the crazy stuff on the road that girls do because girls don't pay attention while they drive
there is a sterio type that americans are very attractive and good looking but if you walk down the street and look around there are alot of overweight and ugly people
In some way it's died down, people still feel like they need to say something.. look at obama, their are so many groups that got together and are determined to not make him president.
Jeni- I think that as a person changes the stereotypes that fit them change as well. So throughout your life you can be associated with meny different stereotypes.
I agree with Macy and Nicole about high school being like the time of getting stereotypes, everyone is changing and trying to figure out where they fit in and people can be grouped in SO many ways! Not all stereotypes are bad though, you can stereotype anyone for pretty much anything, and sometimes it might not be offensive
I agree with April that stereotypes are only made when you don't know a person. Like in the story about the girl, she liked her teacher once she got to know her even though she was ended up being a different race.
Nicole it is probably true that men get into more accidents. Some of this is because the men work force is so much bigger than the women, so we are going to get into more accident because we drive more.
i agree with angelica. I think that some people kind of do feed off of stereotypes because it has happened to one of my friends before when she became a cheerleader
Stereotypes can be totally unfair, whether it's being rascist or just absolutely hating just one person for their looks/personality, and then stereotyping all who they hang out with. And I agree with what Jake said about cheereleaders. Not all cheerleaders or people on the dance teams are mean. Sure, some tryout to have their chance at getting all this attention, but there are a lot who cheer because it's what they love.
I agree with angelica and allie that some people do need to use stereotypes to make them feel bette about themselves. Also I agree with Angelica, Sometimes when girls become cheerleaders they do chang and can think they are better than other peole. But not all cheerleaders are that way.
Pye: Girls are better drivers actually. We tend to not be a violent. We are more verbal. Also we pay better attention. I'm not saying that all women and good drivers but I'm not saying that all women are bad drivers either
i think that the people who have stereotypes disagree with them and that the people who give the stereotypes are jealous, and the people who believe the stereotypes keep believing them until they can prove them wrong.
I agree with rachel that stereotypes can be totally unfair, its stupid that people decide if they like someone or not just by the way they look and not by getting to know someone.
I agree with Nicole and Macy Stereotyping is a huge part of high school. Instead of looking at people for who they really are we make assumptions about that we dont even know because we look at their clothing, music they listen to, their friends, and what we hear about them.
I think he includes this passage because he wants the readers to know what happened and why curlye's wife is acting the way she does. Also she tells Lennie her dream and what she thinks about Curley.
I think that maybe Steinbeck includes the passge to make it seem innocent, like nothing bad is going to happen. Or the more likely reason is that the passage is there to build up to the death.
i think she trying to prove that she isnt just curlys wife and she could have done somthing with her life, curly dosent even know that she could of acheved somthing not just a whore
i agree with jason about making everyone feel sorry for curly's wife before she dies. allie makes a good point also about curly's wife not telling anyone except lennie.
I think she is very lonely, and regrets meeting Curely. I think that she might want to talk to Lennie because he doesnt boss around people, and he gets bossed around. Also i think that she might wanted to talk to him because he is so nice, but i think he thinks that she represents a bad thing, because all he values rabbits, and she will ruin it for him. I think the author wants up to think of CAUSE AND EFFECT in this chapter.
I think that Steinbeck included this passage because he wanted us to know curley's wife a little better. Also he tried to make her seem nicer in this passage so maybe he was trying to make it sadder when she died.
I think this passage is included so that we get to know Curley's wife before she dies. During the whole book she has kinda just been there not really involved in anything so she wasn't really liked but this makes her look like a normal person who has their own issues.
ok... sort of un-related but i dont get the whole relationship thing between Lennie and Curly's wife. Is she like so desperate for attention that she is making that stuff up? Does she really just want someone to talk to that bad? In that case, why does everyone hate her so much? I think the author was trying to make us feel more sorry for her... but it just confused me!
Also, I know Lennie is slow and He doesn't understand what he's doing... and curly's wife had it coming to her. But i still do not know if tending bunnies are an acceptable reason to kill someone.
I think that curleys wife despised curley very much and after all of her dreams had been shot down maybe in a way she wanted Lennie to kill her. She realized he life was not going anywhere, and it seems death was the only option.
I think she only talks to Lennie because she know he's going to listen. She can get him off topic very quickley. She just wants someone to listen to her. I don't really think that she wanted attention I think she was just alone and just wanted to say her thoughts to someone who she knew would listen.
I agree with you Pye because she wants as much attention as possible. If people are constantly on their guard and always watching her, then she will have a ton of attention
Before she died and when she was talking to Lennie my opinion of her did change. All she wanted was to have someone to talk to. She went to Lennie because she knew that he wasn't that smart and would listen to her. Also she has to sneak around her husband to even talk to someone other than Curley
I agree with annie, Why would she stay with Curley if she didn't like him? Also if she had so much potential to be an actress or a model why would she be hanging around the ranch when she could be trying to become something better.
I think it's so horrible how Curley's wife just expects Lennie to listen to her. She wants to be heard by everyone, so maybe she thinks that Lennie wouldn't be any different. I think maybe she only wants the attention because she doesn't get along well with Curley. I agree with Jake that Curley's wife was just provoking Lennie to feeling her hair. I agree with Cassie. Maybe she just started screaming because she wanted attention. I agree with Jason too. Maybe the things that Curley's wife said to Lennie were things that she thought would make him feel sorry for her. In the end, I didn't feel sorry for her at all.
i don't think Lennie is as innocent as everyone is saying. just because he is dumb and forgetful doesn't mean he has absolutely no clue what is happening around him. She is inviting him to touch her hair and he is going along with it even though hes not suppesed to because he also likes attention from someone other than George
I agree with everyone who says that this passage is to help build her character. It kind of shows that she has more of a personaly then is shown in previous parts of the book (even if she doesn't have a wonderful personality)
Could Curley's wife have known that he could kill her at any time because he is so big? Why did she want Lennie's attention? Maybe she thought Lennie didn't pay enough attention to her so this is her mission to get his attention.
I agree with pie, i think that she is acting like a tramp because it gets her more attention. I think that she wants attention and she doesn't care wether its good attention or bad attention.
I disagree with you Conner. I don't think she expected to be killed, or wanted to die. It would make sense, but she doesn't come off as that kind of person.
I dont think she really ment to suduce Lennie, I think she knew better then to do that to a retarded man. Pluse i dont think Lennie knows what that is.
I don't think she was trying to seduce Lennie because I think she was just trying to talk to someone because Curley never let her talk to anybody. Also she probably said feel my hair to Lennie just like you'd say to a friend.
I agree with Cassie that she isn't as innocent as she seems and since Lennie wouldn't really judge her that means that she can say things and get away with saying things she can't talk about with most guys because of curly, it also was expected to happen to her, she tries to make him feel to comfortable with talking to her, and really wanted to get his attention.
Curley's wife did have it coming to her. Maybe she when she was talking to Lennie, she felt she could talk to him about her problems, but she was talking selfishly in my opinion. Saying something like, "OMG, my life is horrible. Please feel sorry for me." Especially in this chapter, I did not feel sorry for her, even if she was being nice to Lennie.
I think that Curley's wife had lennie touch her hair because obviously we all agree that she wants attention and maybe she doesn't get the attention that she needs from Curley so she was trying to get attention from Lennie just because she craves men attention.
im not so sure that curleys wife really portrays the "town whore" anymore. I think she dresses the way she does so men notice her, but shes not really doing it to be sexual. Then i also think that when she talks to Lennie she isnt trying to seduce him but she really is just trying to find comfort in a man and have Lennie to just talk to and listen to her.
I think she wants to be accepted so much that she went to the only other person there was to talk to. I mean you think about it and nobody likes her, while that may be her fault, she still wants someone to like her. I think she was just going to Lennie to talk to someone just because she was lonely.

hi cassie
speaking of bad drivers, ALL women suck at driving
hi cassie! :)
hey angelica, macy, emma, and ellen :)
hey cassie!!!
your the best
Asians invented dance dance revolution!
hey cassie
I think a stereotype is judging or making assumptions without knowing them
jason you are so right go in to any honors calss and 95% of them are asian
oops it didn't let me type the rest, hi Kaleigh, Anj, Macy, and Emma!
Hi angelica, kaleigh, ellen, and macy!
music is a HUGE stereotype i get crap all the time for listening to metal but i give people crap for listening to rap and hip-hop
Really, High-school is pretty much the deffinition of stereotypes. Or at least it holds the largest mass of people who create stereotypes against each other.
And Pye, not all women are bad drivers. It's actually a scientific fact that men get into more car accidents because they are much more impacient.
hey pye..
SHUT UP!!
:D
I think people can be stereotypical without being racist.
alena_ go us lebonese people we are so racist aginst ourselfs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
alena_ go us lebonese people we are so racist aginst ourselfs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pye: i disagree that all woman are bad drivers, it just depends on how much expirence you have. And i do know lots of guys who are terrible drivers too!
i think that jason is right about it's hard not to pay attention to stereotypes.
Nyle: I think you're right, you can have a stereotype against any group or type of people, it doesnt' have to be based on race.
i agree cassie and jason. When you just walk into a honors class there is going to be some kind of asian in there. Also my link leader is an asian and he is pretty smart he is like the student body president or something like that
Stereotyping is every where if you hang out with a cirtain group you could only like those types of people ,and how your parents raise you
I agree with Allie. When people hold onto stereotypes, I guess it's because people are feeling left out so then they continue to make others feel bad so they feel better about themselves.
dont mean to sound racist but most stereotypes do happen to play themselves out a lot
I don't think that 95% of the people in honors classes are Asain Cassie! That's a stereotype right there!
Pye: I also disagree women aren't bad drivers. I agree with ellen it depends on your experience.
i dont think that there are very many stereo types and racism at arapahoe we are pretty open here and accepting of most people
which is way different than the time period we are reading about
crooks seemed kindof bitter about the racism but he should be considering what he goes through
Does someone have to have a stereotype?? I hate how people are just like "assigned" a sterotype. And I don't agree how, i think it was Allie, said that your sterotype stays with you your whole life. So many people change during and after high school, and so can their stereotype.

Stereotypes and racism has died down alot over the years. People are always going to have there own opinion, but we don't talk about it as much.
I definitely agree with Nicole when she said high school is the definition of sterotypes. It's basically the time when everyone is "creating themselves." And how the world wants to see you as.
Nile!!!!!!!! I spelt it right this time! sorry! :)
I agree with April. But I don't agree with you Cassie or Pye. Not all women are bad drivers. Cassie 95% of the people in honors classes are not Asain.
everyone that disagrees with me about female drivers; men may get into more accidents but no men do any of the crazy stuff on the road that girls do because girls don't pay attention while they drive
hey nile
there is a sterio type that americans are very attractive and good looking but if you walk down the street and look around there are alot of overweight and ugly people
the media causes a great deal of the stero types
heyyy Kaleigh Emma Macy and Ellen
I agree with Jeni. Stereotypes change overtime, especially during the transition between High-school and college.
In some way it's died down, people still feel like they need to say something.. look at obama, their are so many groups that got together and are determined to not make him president.
Sadly, i dont think it will ever end.
Jeni- I think that as a person changes the stereotypes that fit them change as well. So throughout your life you can be associated with meny different stereotypes.

i agree with viky and that every one has falts and so there is stereotype all the time
I agree with angelica and allie that some people do need to use stereotypes to make them feel bette about themselves. Also I agree with Angelica, Sometimes when girls become cheerleaders they do chang and can think they are better than other peole. But not all cheerleaders are that way.

good conversation

Chapter 5 was sick!!!! Very action packed.
I think he includes this passage because he wants the readers to know what happened and why curlye's wife is acting the way she does. Also she tells Lennie her dream and what she thinks about Curley.
I think that maybe Steinbeck includes the passge to make it seem innocent, like nothing bad is going to happen.
Or the more likely reason is that the passage is there to build up to the death.
it seems that curlys wife has very low self esteme and feels like she needs to prove to everyone else that she isnt jsut curlys wife
i think she trying to prove that she isnt just curlys wife and she could have done somthing with her life, curly dosent even know that she could of acheved somthing not just a whore
ya it seems like that because she wanted people to know that she could of had a better life and she would be happy
everyone has pteconcieved notion s about curlys wife so i think she talks to lennie because he seems innocent
i agree with jason about making everyone feel sorry for curly's wife before she dies. allie makes a good point also about curly's wife not telling anyone except lennie.
I think she is very lonely, and regrets meeting Curely. I think that she might want to talk to Lennie because he doesnt boss around people, and he gets bossed around. I think the author wants up to think of CAUSE AND EFFECT in this chapter.
I agree with Nicole and April. But why doesn't she leave Curley? That's what makes me so confused!
I think that Steinbeck included this passage because he wanted us to know curley's wife a little better. Also he tried to make her seem nicer in this passage so maybe he was trying to make it sadder when she died.
So, I'm hearing a lot about proving that she could have been more. So why doesn't she tell everyone?
I agree with Nicole. And I also think that a reason he added this passsage is to try and make you have feelings for Curleys wife bofore she dies.
I think this passage is included so that we get to know Curley's wife before she dies. During the whole book she has kinda just been there not really involved in anything so she wasn't really liked but this makes her look like a normal person who has their own issues.
I think she would never cheat on curly but she just wants everyone to think that she is a whore because she likes the attention
if she dosnt like curly why dosnt she devorice curly
ok... sort of un-related but i dont get the whole relationship thing between Lennie and Curly's wife. Is she like so desperate for attention that she is making that stuff up? I don't really think that she wanted attention I think she was just alone and just wanted to say her thoughts to someone who she knew would listen.
i agree with pye about her not actually cheating on curly, but saying that she is to eveyone so she will get more attention.

Maybe the things that Curley's wife said to Lennie were things that she thought would make him feel sorry for her. In the end, I didn't feel sorry for her at all.
Brian: During this time divorce wasn't really that popular of an option. It gave you a bad image.
curlys wife has very low standards if any at all
I think she should have been calmer about the whole thing, knowing Lennies state of being.
I think her motive was to get attention, Jason. lol
I agree with connor about Curly's wife wanting to die. That makes sense about how she provked Lennie and why she wanted attention so bad.
I don't think that she had it coming for her because she doesn't know how scary Lennie can be. She doesn't know what happened in Weed or anything.
i don't think Lennie is as innocent as everyone is saying. just because he is dumb and forgetful doesn't mean he has absolutely no clue what is happening around him.
Is calling her a whore stereotyping her?
Brian- I think Curleys wife might be desperate and needs a man in her life. So I think she's afraid to get in divorce. But i'm not sure.
Could Curley's wife have known that he could kill her at any time because he is so big? Why did she want Lennie's attention? Maybe she thought Lennie didn't pay enough attention to her so this is her mission to get his attention.
I think you all are being to hard on Candy's wife. I dont think had any bad intentions with Lennie. She really just wanted someone to talk to.
I agree with pie, i think that she is acting like a tramp because it gets her more attention. I think that she wants attention and she doesn't care wether its good attention or bad attention.
i kinda am starting to feel bad for her
her husband obviously doesnt fill her needs but i think shes going about it all wrong to find male attention
I disagree with you Conner. I don't think she expected to be killed, or wanted to die.
It would make sense, but she doesn't come off as that kind of person.
I dont think she really ment to suduce Lennie, I think she knew better then to do that to a retarded man. Pluse i dont think Lennie knows what that is.
nile- i dont think we are being to hard she plotted to get attention by getting lennie in trouble she is jsut really mean
i think that curlys wife craves attension and lennie is just an other man to her not trying to do any thing sexual to him
I don't think she was trying to seduce Lennie because I think she was just trying to talk to someone because Curley never let her talk to anybody.
I think she was just honestly telling Lennie to feel her hair because they have something in common. nothing more that a conversation about... hair?
I think that Curley's wife had lennie touch her hair because obviously we all agree that she wants attention and maybe she doesn't get the attention that she needs from Curley so she was trying to get attention from Lennie just because she craves men attention.
im not so sure that curleys wife really portrays the "town whore" anymore. I think she dresses the way she does so men notice her, but shes not really doing it to be sexual. Then i also think that when she talks to Lennie she isnt trying to seduce him but she really is just trying to find comfort in a man and have Lennie to just talk to and listen to her.
vicki_ i agree that lennie is some what nieve but curlys wife is not she knew what she was doing
I think she wants to be accepted so much that she went to the only other person there was to talk to. I mean you think about it and nobody likes her, while that may be her fault, she still wants someone to like her. I think she was just going to Lennie to talk to someone just because she was lonely.
vick makes a good point. i don't think she ment to seduce him i think it was just kind of habit for her because she seems to do it all the time.
Why didn't these men try to get Curley to calm down so he wouldn't "shoot the guts out" of Lennie?
I agree with connor she is just trying to talk and she dresses the way she feels comfortable
