i thought that chapters 4 and 5 were good because it starts telling the actual story instead of just describing the characters.

Mark W said...

I think that chapters 4 and 5 explain more about the connection between the characters and the history behind how they were created.

ddenton76 said...

I like them because the chapters really let the reader understand the characters alot more

BrianW said...

i agree with george because he states i never really look at hassan being my friend

annies said...

I don't agree with George because he says that Hassan and Amir are not friends. I think Hassan and Amir are friends and like Nile said, Amir just said that because he was scared.

Emma said...

I agree with Elizabeth, i liked chapters 4 and 5 better because they weren't just describing the character and the story actually begins to start.

Macy D. said...

I think chapters 4 and 5 were a lot more intersting. Instead of just describing the characters, it tells the story and history. I can understand the book better.

samh said...

I think that George is wrong in saying that Amir only considers Hassan as his servant. Later on in the book Amir refers to Hassan as his brother and they are friends, he's not just Amir's servant.

RachelK said...

I agree with George that history is hard to overcome. And also that Amir and Haasan aren't very good friends. If Amir is embarrassed by Haasan, then my question is why? Is it just because Haasan is "his servant" and Amir is higher in "rank" than he is?

KatieW said...

George-
I think you are jumping to conclusions in saying that Amir and Hassan are not friends. He probably just says that around superior people because he is embarrassed of his ethnicity. I also think that he is jealous of Hassan and is trying to make himself more the center of attention rather than Hassan who gets it effortlessly.

jamieG said...

I think That he is mainly confused about how he really feels about Hassan. He didn't want people to know that he had true feelings for Hassan, but inside he really did love and care for him.

AprilH said...

I agree with George because Amir talks about how he only considers Haasan as servant. He also talks about how he likes to tease Haasan about how he can't read. And also when ever he is playing with other rich kids he never includes Haasan. I feel like he is embarassed of Haasan even though Haasan is his true friend.

Liap said...

I think that Amir is not only embarassed but he is also scared that other people will ridicule him and Hassan and possibly become violent towards them. He sees him as a good friend, but he doesn't want others to know because he is afraid they will judge him.

Anonymous said...

I agree with George when he is saying that religion and race plays a major fact in weather or not Hassan and Amir are Friends. Amir is pressured not to be friends with him because Hassan is a Hazara and also a Shite muslim. However, I still think that Amir and Hassan are friends, but Amir doesn't know how to stand up for that fact.

adamc said...

I think that chapters 4 and 5 were a lot more interesting and weren't really hard to read like the other chapters.

BrianW said...

baba also donsent like how he acts amir would rather read a poem that go hunting

samh said...

I liked chapters 4 and 5 because, as many other people said, it really gets in to the actual story instead of looking back and describing characters.

Emma said...

I think that they are kind of friends because they grew up together and have good memories of the fun they had together, but I dont't think that Amir considers Hassan his friend. But i think that he likes him, and cares about him.

Mark W said...

I completely agree with Allie because Baba is lacking affection for Amir, which may have created the loss of Baba's wife.

michellev said...

I think that Hassan and Amir are truely friends but Amir doesn't realize it, like he doesn't see him as his friend but in reality they really are friends.

Shay N said...

I agree with George because he never really says that Amir is friends with Hassan and that he only plays with him since he is there.

annies said...

I agree with Allie and Nicole because they both said that the reason Baba almost likes Hassan more than Amir because he is the child that Baba always wanted. Amir is more into books and writing, while Hassan is more into sports and hunting and things. Baba is also, in a way, mad at Amir because he killed his wife

elizabeth k said...

I think Baba is disapointed that his wife is dead and he traces the death back to Amir. but i also think that he loves Amir so much that its hard to blame him for that.

AprilH said...

I agree wtih Jamie. I think Amir really doesn't know what to think and he is just confused about their friendship. He knows that Haasan is always going to be there for him caring about him even though Amir can sometimes treat him badly.

Macy D. said...

I agree with Sam. I think Geroge was wrong in saying Hassan is only a servent to him. They are more closer than that. And I think in the end they will be good friends.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Emma and Elizabeth about chapters 4 and 5. They start to let you form your own ideas about the story and really see how the characters get along with each other

KatieW said...

I agree with Nicole when she said that the lack of affection Baba has for Amir affects Amir and Hassan's relationship. Maybe if he would show more love for Amir and not blame him for killing his beloved wife, Amir wouldn't feel that jealousy towards Hassan.

RachelK said...

I agree with Jamie about being confused about Hassan and Amir's friendship. I'm not really sure exactly what Amir thinks of Haasan, but then it also seems like he has mixed feelings. He knows that Haasan is his servant, but I also want to know what besides growing up together makes them strong friends now.

ddenton76 said...

I think baba is upset that Amir would rather read books than go hunting as brian said. Thats why baba would rather have hassan as a child than amir

JeniC said...

For those of you who have read further into the book, you know how their friendship is tested. It completely changed my viewpoint on Amir and Hassan being friends. At the begining of the book, I considered them good friends, but now, later in the book, I see Hassan as the true friend and Amir as someone turning his back on a friend.

adamc said...

I agree with George because they are related it also seems like they are both trying to be dominant. I think that is important to them to be on top especially to Hassan because he was poor.

AprilH said...

I liked chapters 4 and 5 because they did get more in depth and into the story. They start to talk about the relationships and connections to the characters.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Elizabeth about Baba somewhat blaming Amir for his wife's death. I think maybe that's why he can't just love Amir for who he is, even though he is not the kind of son Baba always wanted. Because Amir "stole" Baba's wife, Baba has a permanent grudge on Amir.

Emma said...

I also agree with George i think that their race and religion do play factors in what keeps them from admitting their friendship. Amir sees himself as being superior but he obviously cares for Hassan since he is constantly reading him stories. I dont think they call eachother friends because they are a part of separate religions and race.

annies said...

Educatoin has a lot to do with this book because since Hassan is not educated, he doesn't read. And Amir is educated so he does read and he likes to read. Since Hassan doesn't know how to read, he has more time to do other things like sports which is what impresses Baba, while reading and writing, which is what Amir does, does not.

samh said...

Baba has problems with Amir because he isn't into the things that Baba is like sports. Amir likes books and creative things more. On the other hand, Hassan likes to play sports and do the things that Baba likes to be which shows that Baba seems to almost like Hassan more than his own son.

RachelK said...

I think that the idea of Haasan being Amir's servant could make their frienship a little weird or weakened if Amir gets more power hungry or wanting to stay superior to Haasan.

Liap said...

I think Baba really took a liking to Hassan, because Hassan is the perfect boy- he is well behaved, athletic, and brave- but he still loves Amir as a son. However, I think Amir is jealous of Baba's love for Hassan, and wishes his father loved him more.

Mark W said...

I agree with Meghan because Amir just wants approval from Baba to know that he has impressed him. He knows that if he gets an approval from Baba, he is successful.

Anonymous said...

I think Amir is very self concious about himself, especially with Hassan. He always over-defends himself when Hassan does something better than him, and he always wants to leave Hassan out of activites he does with his dad, sinse his dad seems to love Hassan more. He feels like he needs to prove himself to his father, and when Hassan does something "better" Amir gets embarassed.

samh said...

Hassan shouldn't need to strive to be better than Amir because he is already accepted by Baba. He doesn't have to prove anything.

elizabeth k said...

i disagree with george because he is saying that amir and hassan are not friends and i believe that they are. i think that its hard for them to be friends but they still are friends.

AprilH said...

I feel like Amir is competitive with Haasan because he always seems to be competing against Haasan. Amir always wants to be better than Haasan and gets jealous if Haasan is better at something. I also agree with Megan because I feel like Amir is trying to get approval from his father and Haasan doesn't.

Pye said...

I agree with Megan, Amir feels the need to prove himself to his father because he looks at himself as inferior to his father and because of that he needs to prove his worth to everyone else

BrianW said...

i think that hassan is friends with amir but amir dosent want to be friends with him because of his lower class. amir tricks hassan because he cant read and calls him an imbecile by describing the word to him.

adamc said...

I agree with Rachel that Hassan and Amir's relationship was a little weird because he is Amir's servant and thats why I don't think that they are really friends.

allison t said...

When we did our character map, we made Hassan's symbol a halo and angel wings. Hassan is more appreciative than Amir because Amir is greedy because of the wealth he grew up with and Hassan is thankful that Baba is fatherly to him while his own father is working.

Liap said...

I think Amir's jealousy of Hassan stems from the fact that his father is kind of cold towards him, and Hassan is loved by both of their fathers.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Nicole that them hiding from the bombs was a poisitive situation because Hassan and Amir were just there for eachother and neither was trying to be better

KaleighD said...

I agree with Rachel, i dont know whether or not Hassan and Amir can be considered true friends because I think that Amir just considers Hassan his servant but Hassan thinks differently and probably sees Amir as a true friend.

KatieW said...

I also think that Amir feels Baba's embarrassment of him. Baba loves Hassan because of his values and the good person he is, while Amir is still kind of lost on that topic.

annies said...

I don't agree with Nile when he says that Hassan should be trying to make himself be better than Amir because of the situation he is in, because he probably knows how Amir wants to be more accepted by Baba. And Hassan sees that he has a father that accepts him for who he is while Amir does not. Amir has a father that would only accept him for doing sports or manly things.

Macy D. said...

Baba needs to have everything perfect. Since Amir doesn't play sports, Baba has a problem with that. Which in my opinion isn't fair. Just because Hassan plays sports, Baba likes him better than his own kid. Which is kind of sad.

Shay N said...

Hassan thinks he is frineds with Amir but Amir dosent think they are friends. Amir is jealous when Hassan beats him at anything while Hassan is happy for Amir when he wins.

samh said...

I agree with George when he made the point that we see that Baba does care about Amir when he comes home after the gunshots and gives them all hugs. It just shows that he was concerned with Amir's safety and that he does care.

allison t said...

I agree with Lia that Amir is jealous of Hassan because he is more accepted by Baba than Amir. I think that Amir wants Hassan out of his life so that he can get his father back to himself.

annies said...

I agree with Meghan when she says that Baba is more caring than he makes himself out to be. And Ali, Baba, Amir and Hassan all have that their mothers, or wives, are gone, so I think that that is something that makes them closer to each other.

KatieW said...

I agree with Megan because I think that Baba really does care about both of them a lot, he just does not show it, which hurts Amir.

JeniC said...

Everyone is saying how Baba seems to favor Hassan in a way that he doesn't favor Amir. Do you think he does it on purpose?

michellev said...

Baba isn't a more caring person because he isn't proud of his own son because his son isn't like him, he is more about being the big guy and wants to be looked up at, and he wants his son to be like that too. He even said that if he wasn't at Amir's birth he wouldn't believe Amir was his son. I also agree that he is also hiding his feelings for Amir, he doesn't know how to show that he really does care about his son, but other things are getting in the way.

elizabeth k said...

i agree with megan. ali, baba, hassan, and amir are all so close because they have all lost someone so close to them and i think that is good for them to be around each other because they relate so much.

Emma said...

I agree with Lia that Baba likes Hassan since they share similar interests and hobbies. He is fond of Hassan and treats him like a son which makes Amir jealous. I think this might be another factor in why Amir doesn't call Hassan a friends is because he is jealous of the way his dad treats him like a son when Amir wants more attention from his dad. I think that Baba loves Amir, even though he doesn't pay a lot of attention to him.

ddenton76 said...

I think that Amir gets pissed off when Hassan beats him at anyhting because he knows that Hassan is lower than him so when Hassan beats him it seems like Hassan is equal or better than him

adamc said...

I think that he does do it on purpose because he feels sorry for Hassan.

Liap said...

I agree with Sam in that Baba really does love Amir, but maybe he is just unable to express his feelings for fear of looking effeminate. I think the reason Baba acts like he does is just a product of his culture.

AprilH said...

I agree with Megan. They are all connected together by the deaths of their wives and know what the other went through. The part left of Baba's wife is Amir and maybe seeing Amir reminds him of the death of his wife. And that might be why he acts different around Amir.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Sam that Baba does care about Amir, even if you can't always see it. They will all always have a bond becuase Ali and Baba are like brothers and they both lost their wifes, and Hassan and Amir are like brothers and they both lost their moms, and Baba and Amir are connected in the bond so they have to care about eachother

Shay N said...

Although Baba loves his son Amir he wishes that either Hassan was his son or Amir was never born so that he still had his wife. Why can Baba just accept his son?

ddenton76 said...

I think that baba thinks that Amir is a mistake and if he was never born than he would still have a wife

RachelK said...

I agree with Meghan when she said that Ali, Baba, Amir, and Haasan are all more close-knit together and have more connections by the losses of their wives/mothers. They may be different in religion and rank in society, but they seem pretty close. Sometimes it seems a little hard for all of them to show emotion, especially for Baba and Amir. It seems like Ali and Haasan are very close wih each other. I think Baba's emotions are kind of weak towards Amir because of how busy he is. I also agree with Meghan when she said that Baba may be scared to get close to Amir because he's afraid of losing Amir, too.

Macy D. said...

Like we said in class yesterday, friends compete with one another, I think Amir is jealous of Hassan. He thinks he is better and maybe even wishes he could be him. Amir wants to be accepted by his father, he wants that love that Hassan gets. So he is trying to prove himself.

I dont think that Baba thinks poorly of Amir because of his wifes death. I think that Baba doesnt really like Amir because the really have nothing in common and they cant relate to eachother.

adamc said...

I agree with George and that it is an alagory for his father and that is a way to express his love

allison t said...

I don't think Baba is mad at Amir for his wife's death. I think that he just wants a son that shares the same interests and has a more of an attitude like Hassan.

michellev said...

I agree with Allie that Amir is always a consist reminder of Babas wifes death, that might be a bug reason that they have a hard time, and are being ripped apart.

BrianW said...

i agree with george that the story amir wrote was realy about baba and how he can never be fufiled

Emma said...

I agree with Nowlan, Amir is also jealous of Ali's and Hassan's relationship. Their relationship is a more loving relationship than Amir's with his father. I think that Amir is jealous of a lot of things about Hassan and thats probably why he feels he needs to be superior and always teases and pulls pranks on Hassan. It makes him feel better about himself.

RachelK said...

From off of what Allie said, I can't help but ask if a reason that Baba's emotions are weak and empty towards Amir is because maybe he considers Amir a burden or as a harm emotionally to him when he was born and Baba's wife died.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Nicole that Baba is hurt by looking at Amir with love because it makes him think about his wife. Which is why he fills his life with money, and which is why it seems easier for him to love Hassan

JeniC said...

Since Baba and Ali are similar in the way that they both lost their wives after reciving a son, I think that they somewhat favor eachother's sons. Baba gives extra attention to Hassan, and Ali gives Amir extra encouragment.

Liap said...

I disagree with George that the Pearl story is about Baba. I think Amir misunderstands Baba's coldness, and thinks that he is a heartless and uncaring man.

AprilH said...

Also, I agree with George because Baba does love his son but shows it in a different way. Maybe he doesn't know how to quite show his feelings yet. Also he does care because when George pointed out that Baba came home after the gun shots and gave them hugs showing that he was worried about his son and was happy to see him.

KatieW said...

I agree with George when he talks about how Baba might be the richest man in the world but he is not happy. Now he cares about money and tries to fill the hole of his wife's death with it. Also, Amir reminds him everyday of her and how she died, which does not help. On the other hand, I think Ali realizes this and tries to be a father to Amir as well as Hassan, but he is careful to love them evenly.

Pye said...

I agree with Ally. Rahim is much more of a father figure in Amirs life than Baba could ever be. Maybe Rahim is amirs real dad?... Maybe?

Shay N said...

Does Rahim notice that Baba dosent treat Amir very well and try to make up for Baba by being nice to Amir?

elizabeth k said...

i agree with allie. amir and hassan are consant reminders to Baba that the love of his life is dead.

Mark W said...

I think that Amir is a little jealous of Baba because Amir wants to be successful just like Baba. Amir wants to be more like Baba.

KaleighD said...

In our class blog yesterday we talked about whether or not we think it's possible to be friends with someone that you consider better then you. I think that one of the main reasons that Amir doesn't consider Hassan his friend is because he feels the competeition between them and Baba. Because Baba acts that Hassan is more of his son then Amir and that makes Amir envious of Hassan which results in them not being considered "true friends."

allison t said...

Jeni makes a good point. I think since Ali and Baba have been through the same situation with loosing a wife they feel bad for the other's son for not having a mother.

Shay N said...

I agree with George about how Baba is a rich guy and how Amir wants to be like Baba but just isnt and has his own personality and wants to make his dad happy but just cant.

Pye said...

I agree with George, we accept the life we are shown. If you are born rich, grow up rich, and are always given a sense of entitlement to what you have than will always feel entitled to be rich

Liap said...

I think that because Amir doesn't understand his father he has used his idea of his dead mother as a role model. He has an idyllic idea of who she was and how loving she would be, so he tries to model himself after her instead of his father.

JeniC said...

Shay, I think that he does give Amir a little bit of extra attention, for example giving him confidence about the story he wrote

Macy D. said...

I agree with Jake with how she said, when your talking to someone, you always say "my house" not "my parents house." So I think Amir can take some credit.

Mark W said...

Rahim is definitely a better role model than Baba, but Amir still looks up to Baba because he needs his appreciation.

KaleighD said...

I agree with allie, when she said that Baba probably looks down upon Amir because Baba loved his wife and when he looks at Amir Baba, probably thinks about how if he was never here then his wife would have never died a and thats probably why he likes hassan more, it may have nothing to do with sports.

BrianW said...

i think that everyone respects Baba but no one respects Ali the call him the boogeyman

ddenton76 said...

Baba doesnt really act like a father figure towards amir but he does toward Hassan and Ali kinda acts like a father figure toward Amir

Aaron H. said...

I agree with Mark that Rahim Khan is a better role model for Amir than Baba is. Rahim is more of a father figure in Amir’s life than Baba is; Rahim always comes up behind Amir when Amir needs someone. Baba never has anything to do with Amir unless Amir is successful with something. I also agree with Allie because Baba did love his wife, but he also loved Amir until Amir grew up differently than Baba did. Baba grew up in sports and his very tough; however, Amir is not that tough and isn’t very interested in sports.
